Dubai issues $9m in fines for tailgating last year

New statistics released by the UAE’s Ministry of Interior showed an average of 230 drivers were caught tailgating every day across the country last year.
Police authorities in the country recorded 84,000 tailgating violations on the country’s roads during last year, according to a report in 7Days newspaper, resulting in an estimated $9 million (AED33,600,000) in fines.
Officials said tailgating was the cause of 151 major accidents in the first quarter this year, which each offence resulting in a fine of AED400 and four black points for the driver.
A traffic official from the Ministry of Interior told 7Days that tailgating leads to a loss of concentration for the driver in front.
